Nourishing 4500 school Going Children with freshly cooked Mid-Day meals.
Food which is a basic necessity for every human being is actually a luxury to thousands of people in India today. A major section of India’s population is unable to get at least one complete square meal a day. According to a recent study by the Institute of Development Studies, 6,000 children in India die per day; 2,000-3,000 of these deaths are linked to malnutrition. In Mumbai, over 26,000 children die per year due to malnutrition[1].
Undernourishment means that a person is unable to acquire enough food to meet the daily minimum dietary energy requirements. India has been growing steadily richer in recent years, but it still has more malnourished people, especially children, than any other country.
In light of this situation Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust has resolved to liberate the underprivileged children from the vicious cycle of poverty and illiteracy by serving them nutritious Mid-Day meals.
Ratna Nidhi believes in providing children with the right nutrition to support their education. Our Food for Education program is based on the belief that ‘you are what you eat’. Therefore, our nutritious meals are prepared with compassion and love, the way a mother would prepare a meal for her child, brings thousands of children to school daily.
Ratna Nidhi’s Food for Education program distributes free food prepared at our kitchens to 4500 children across 37 schools in Mumbai on a daily basis, to poor children if they attend any formal or non-formal educational class. It thus combines food with education. The program has been very effective in arresting the drop-out rate in schools. Till date we have distributed over 2.5 crore meals.
